Horrifying as it is to admit, I’m very happy to have been born to be at the age that I am right now in the 2010’s. Of course, there have been times that I wished I lived in Paris at the turn of the 19th century, when the revolution was still seen as an exciting and liberating movement and being a writer was a credible career where writing an account of my life could have become a classic part of literature not unlike the works of Henry Miller and Anais Nin. There have been times that I wished I lived in New York in the 1960’s, when the ‘American Dream’ was still seen as an optimistic and attainable lifestyle rather than the prelude to the demise of the Western civilization. I even have wished that I grew up in the 1990’s, before the Internet blew up and killed the music industry, when saving the world from itself was a promising and environmentally-concerned idea and led to outbursts like the now legendary ‘Battle of Seattle’ at the WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999. No, I’m more content that I can look back fondly to the 20th century as a whole, and see that mankind is only solving its problems by creating new ones. I am happy that penicillin exists and the government has decided that World War III is probably never going to be a good idea. I’m happy that the only thing left for my generation to do is try not to be consumed by technology. Last but most certainly not least - I’m happy that Woody Allen is still making movies.

Granted, Woody Allen probably should have stopped making movies in the 20th century. I highly regard Annie Hall and Manhattan as some of my most favourite films to date, but Whatever Works? Oh my Allan Konigsberg, you're killing me! Don't even get me started on his latest project, Midnight in Paris, which is more of an art historian's wet dream than an appropriate opening contender of the Cannes' Film Festival this year. Okay, so I've started.

Allen's tendency as a filmmaker to base his plot around the witty-comedian-screenwriter-who-wants-to-be-an-author finds his protagonist traveling through time in Paris at midnight (who could have guessed?) where he miraculously crosses paths with several of his literary heroes, including Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein. There is a charming scene where he finds himself at a table with Luis Bunuel, Man Ray, and Salvador Dali. He even finds himself in the middle of a fantasy love triangle between him and Pablo Picasso's mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter (dream on dream on dream on).

Despite Owen Wilson (curiously chosen to starr as Woody Allen)'s indifference to the potentially Harry Potter-esque special effects that (don't) occur as he is magically thrown back in time - not to mention the overall lack of an anticipated ground-breaking climax where this magical occurrence is explained to the audience - what attempted to make sense of the two worlds was when he declared that life in general is unsatisfactory; the notion of fantasy igniting the reason why everyone wishes at some point or another that they lived in a different place and at a different time. That fact alone I can agree with, as aforementioned.

Upon turning Marie-Thérèse's insight into this life-affirming moment, Owen Wilson leaves Rachel McAdams (spoiler alert - though hardly unpredictable), and the film's credits proceed after the closing scene where he walks away in the rain with that gorgeous Kate Moss look-a-like.

Thank you, Woody Allen. You have worn out the very last of your creative, romantic, and witty splendor as a director. Now please - you had an excellent run, I love you, whatever - kindly do us all a favour and stop making movies.
